As santitafarella says:
I define faith as an emotional commitment to a worldview that exceeds what is currently known (or can be known) empirically. Faith is any belief that cannot derive its warrant from the empirical. Atheism fits into this definition as thoroughly as any religion. To say that all events in nature the laws of physics, the first cell, the advent of mind etc. are the products of blind atoms contingently shifting in the void vastly exceeds what we can know empirically, and yet it is the premise underlying all atheism. Atheism has an enormous burden of proof to overcome. It must explain how the appearance of order and information in the universe and I mean ALL of it is actually the product of blind contingencies. It is so far from doing this that it isn t even funny.

But noreply@blogger.com (Flimsyma n) says that's not all:
4.  Authority/Respect - concerning social and cultural hierarchies, and tradition. 5.  Purity/Sanctity - concerning resistance to cultural immorality and/or physical contamination.

Having that in mind, humblemonkey wonders:
I go back to the idea of us being storypeople. We all simply want to share our stories with others and be a part of the stories God is writing in other people s lives. It s no coincidence that we have been given a biblical narrative into which to live; God created us to be people of story. We become flawed when we want to justify our stories. Or when we make the lens in which we view the world the only correct way as if our stories outweigh everyone else s. Or when we don t have grace, forgetting that the stories of our lives greatly influence how we live in this world; some people behave a certain way because that s the only story they know. Speaking of gangs, I watched a documentary on gangs in the U.S. and talked with some guys who are in a gang afterward. If you grow up in a certain hood here in the States, you belong to a certain gang. That s just how it is. They simply live into the narrative the culture has written for them without even realizing the re are alternative stories out there.

However, noreply@blogger.com (Flimsyman) thinks differently:
absolutely require the first and second to be present as well. Think of all the greatest ethical cock-ups in human history; the ancient Hebrew war crimes, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Holocaust, all the various genocides of native peoples in the Americas and Africa.  Can anyone credibly argue that these atrocities resulted from applications of the first or second moral dimensions?  Or were they all

Still being unsure, dieshellsuitdie asks:

Jess objects:
Agreed, and I think it's funny that I could manifest a new religion right now that would benefit mankind More than the flawed teachings of Christianity.

Dating rules thinks that the problem is:
Mr Hex Vision Said, Get her to Give you what you want for the lie of accepting christ

humblemonkey considers that:
Thank you for this post. Challenging to consider when I most often think of this topic on its head!

santitafarella comes with the facts:
Really refreshing and interesting thoughts. I would be a theist, actually, but I confess that even so, I still have doubts. I still question from time to time. There are mornings I wake up and wonder if I m out of my mind to believe. But atheism never appealed to me either for the reasons you suggest, that it means that this life is it.
